The Winery

The Valmarina Estate

This estate, which extends over an area of 27 hectares, is part of the Bergamo Municipality and participating to the Urban Vineyard Association (www.urbanvineyards.org). The land is partly woodland and partly vineyard.

The vineyards were completely replanted starting in 2009, following modern cultivation techniques and making the various stages of work fully mechanized.

Today, the vineyards cover an area of about 5 hectares, located in a natural amphitheater of high landscape value, easily recognizable to those who travel along Bergamo's cycle and pedestrian path that crosses the property, from which one can enjoy a splendid view.

The vine rows are cultivated on the slope of a clay-limestone hill, in a cool valley but facing south and sheltered from the winds, with optimal exposure to sunlight and fresh air. The rows are planted with a spacing of 220 x 80 cm.

Types of Grape

The estate produces red, white and sparkling white wine. The red wine is produced from Merlot grapes, which are well known for their pure vinification. The white wine includes Riesling Renano and Italico, and with this important variety, we obtain a fresh, floral, and aromatic white that undergoes long bottle aging and is definitely not an "annual" wine. Another white variety is Chardonnay, which lends itself to both still wine or sparkling production.

We also have a significant plot of Pinot Noir. Originally cultivated in Burgundy and Champagne, the biotype selected for planting in Valmarina produces high-quality wine, both as red and white, and is used as the base for sparkling wine with a rich bouquet. Additionally, we have planted Piwi (an acronym for pilzwiderstandfähig, meaning "fungus-resistant vines") varieties Solaris and Souvignier Gris. These are still relatively unknown varieties but embody our philosophy of producing wines while minimizing phytosanitary interventions, and they certainly surprise with their unmistakable bouquet. Usualy they are vinified in purity to enhance their strength. The key feature of these varieties is their minimal need for treatments, achieved by crossing plants that preserve the organoleptic properties, align with organic practices, and offer consistent resistance to fungal factors.

Specifically, Solaris is considered a perfect and exceptionally resistant vine, producing intense, fresh, and aromatic whites. Souvignier Gris, on the other hand, produces long-lasting wines with pronounced acidity. The Lombardy Region has included these two varieties in the list of plants that can be designated as DOC or IGT, and we are awaiting the provincial government of Bergamo to adopt the regional regulations. Currently, due to bureaucratic and industry resistance, we can only produce table wines without specific designation. However, we firmly believe that growing Piwi is undoubtedly a mark of quality and demonstrates a growing commitment to the environment.

While our company is not yet certified organic, it has always followed organic farming practices, respecting the unique nature of the region where the vineyards are located. The wine produced is marketed under the Valmarina brand. Our wine represents not only a high-quality product but also a true testament to the history and culture of the Moroni family and the Bergamo area, making it a unique and unforgettable experience for wine lovers, respecting sustainable agriculture and the best Italian traditions.

Our Vineyards

In the rows, there is an important plot of Pinot Noir. Originally cultivated in Burgundy and Champagne, the biotype selected for planting in Valmarina produces high-quality grapes, both for red and white winemaking, and serves as a base for sparkling wines with a rich bouquet.

The Reds

The red wine is made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, well known for either single-varietal vinification or the classic Bordeaux blend.

The Whites

The white wines include Riesling Renano and Italico, and with this important grape variety we obtain a fresh, floral, and aromatic wine that undergoes long bottle aging and is certainly not a vintage white.

Another white is Chardonnay, suitable for either still or sparkling vinification.

Additionally, among the whites, we have planted the PIWI varieties Solaris and Souvignier Gris.
